"Maybe if I go to China to train for a month I will become the best in my country!"

Summer is almost over, and that means all the kids who have gone out to other countries to train are coming home. And let me tell you, very few show too much improvement when they return. Most come back a little fitter, with maybe a few trick shots, and slightly improved technique. However the big mistake these players make when they return is returning to their regular training habits from before. This will render your hard work out of the country almost useless and reduce it to just a good experience. One of my best friends has been going to China every summer for the past three years, and when he comes back he often shows some improvement, but the funny thing is that he improves even more when he gets back and trains in Canada. That is he is smart enough to realize that just training hard for a month or two overseas is not the only thing that makes you better. The reasons these players from China and other countries are so good, are the ways they are training. The drills they do and their fitness routines make them the amazing prodigies they are in their own country. So what my friend does is he goes to China not only TO train, but to LEARN HOW to train. And that is what makes the difference. Too many people assume "Player X is going to Indonesia/China/Malaysia for the summer to train, he is going to be so super good when he gets back." And the unfortunate reality is that most of these players come home and go back to regular Canadian training. They will find themselves losing to the same kids they were losing to before.
One or two months is not enough to make you significantly better if you do not change the way you train at home. Of course you will notice large differences if you go away for long periods at a time, like one to three years, because that will assure that you do not slip back into old training methods.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with players going away to train. I hope to do it myself one day when I find myself in a financially stable situation. But if you go, let it count for something. Make use of the knowledge you have gained to make yourself a better player, instead of hoping that you will become instantly better just by playing badminton in a different country.
