My views on Badminton Leagues.

I believe the future of badminton rests on badminton leagues developing all over the world. This idea of professional league play has enjoyed massive success in Denmark. I will give a brief overview of what badminton leagues are, just in case you don't know the deal. Basically, various sponsors fund teams, made up of the best players from an area, and these teams will play each other, and eventually one team will win the league championship. I think of it as NHL vs Olympic hockey. The "NHL" being the league, while the "Olympic hockey" is country based, international badminton. The players in the professional leagues are getting paid for just playing, while in international badminton, you only get paid if you win.
Let me explain why this is the future of badminton. If these high level professional clubs develop all over North America, then the dream of a getting a salary from playing badminton could be realized here in Canada. Therefore, more young badminton players from areas like Canada or the US, where badminton is not an acceptable career path, could have the option of playing badminton for a living. Recently, these professional leagues have been sprouting up in many high level badminton areas. India just started their own, with team owners just bidding on players right now. The Indonesia Superliga was just concluded for the season, having successfully revived league badminton in Indonesia. Of course, Denmark's famous club league has stood the test of time, and is still drawing in the world's best players. Lastly, China's super league has an amazing quality of play. The China super league is the highest quality of badminton I have seen in a while. Here is a men's doubles match that I have been replaying over and over again.
